NOVEMBER 2011
WorkSafe have issued a Safety Alert in response to a recent incident which occurred when an operator replaced a single diamond tipped cutting bade on a petrol demolition saw with two blades. The consequences of these actions, which were not in line with the manufacturer’s safe use instructions, saw the two blades, whilst rotating at high speed, detach and fly 50 metres across the site. Luckily no one was injured, had anyone been struck they would have been seriously injured or killed. Demolition saw operators must follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using equipment of this nature.
Employers must ensure that demolition saw operators:
•Follow a safe system of work - use a Safe Work Method Statement
•Are instructed in the safe operation and limitations of demolitions saws and are competent in the use of the saw being used and the task at hand
•Are wearing the appropriate personal protection equipment – flammable clothing should not be worn if the sawing operation generates sparks
Hire companies must provide their clients with relevant safe use information when the equipment is hired, including information on blade selection, installation and use.
